Age
Definition
A player’s division
assignment is based on his age as of May 1. Example: If a player will turn
11 on April 20, 2012 he would play in the Bronco division for the 2012
season. A player who wishes to play in an older division may do so. Under very limited
circumstances, and only with full board approval, is a player allowed to play
in a younger division.
Game Scheduling
Teams are generally
scheduled for no more than two games each week. Games are scheduled on
weeknights and on Saturday mornings, with some Saturday afternoons. Shetland weeknight games are only at
5:30pm. The Shetland & Pinto seasons should be completed around May 15 - and
the older divisions should all be completed by June 2. Games which are
rained out - or not played for another reason other than forfeit - will be
rescheduled.
Park Locations
- Desert Breeze Park -- between Ray & Chandler
Blvd. and Rural & McClintock

information.
Shetland Division (ages 4 - 6)
This is the lowest level
of play, also referred to as "T-ball" because the players use a
"Tee" to hit the ball off of. The emphasis is strictly on learning
the game and is not meant to be competitive at all. Scorebooks are used but
only to keep track of runs scored and the batting order; scores are not
announced or recorded. All players are allowed in the field on defense and
coaches are allowed to be on the field to advise them. Play stops when an
infielder holds up the ball. On offense all players bat and are allowed five
swings at the ball. A team bats each half-inning until three outs are recorded
or six runs are scored. As much as possible teams are formed by neighborhood or
by requesting a particular coach. Each player is awarded a trophy at the end of
the season.
Pinto Division (ages 7 & 8)
At this level a pitching
machine is used to get the players familiar with hitting a pitched ball. Like
T-ball the emphasis is on learning the game and the games should only be mildly
competitive. To limit runaway scores a team which is ahead is only allowed to score six runs each inning. A team is allowed ten players
and one coach on defense. Play stops when an infielder holds up the ball. On
offense all players are put in the batting order and are allowed five swings at
the ball. Catching equipment is used but primarily to get players used to it.
As much as possible teams are formed by neighborhood or by requesting a
particular coach. Each player is awarded a trophy at the end of the season.
Mustang Division (ages 9 & 10)
This is the first level
of play at which real baseball is played. Bases are at 60'; pitcher's mound at
44'. Players are taught pitching, catching, leadoffs, stealing, etc. There are two divisions: Competitive - where coaches may protect up to
an entire team of 12 players; and Recreational - where coaches may protect 2
players each (plus up to 2 more if they recruit 1 or 2 sponsors) and the
remainder of the teams are formed via the draft (see Tryouts & Draft below)
with the tryouts on February 11. Trophies are generally awarded for 1st,
2nd & 3rd place in the regular season; medals are
generally awarded for 1st & 2nd place in the tournament.
Bronco Division (ages 11 & 12)
Bases are at 70';
pitcher's mound at 48'. Players become more competitive and proficient at the
various aspects of the game. There are two divisions: Competitive - where
coaches may protect up to an entire team of 12 players; and Recreational - where coaches may protect
2 players each (plus up to 2 more if they recruit 1 or 2 sponsors) and the remainder of the teams are formed via the draft
(see Tryouts & Draft below) with the tryouts on February 18. Trophies are
generally awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place
in the regular season; medals are generally awarded for 1st & 2nd
place in the tournament.
Pony Division (ages 13 & 14)
Bases are at 80';
pitcher’s mound at 54'. There are two divisions: Competitive - where
coaches may protect up to an entire team of 12 players; and Recreational - where coaches may protect
2
players each (plus up to 2 more if they recruit 1 or 2 sponsors) and the remainder of the teams are formed
via the draft (see
Tryouts & Draft below) with the tryouts on February 25. Trophies are awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place
in the regular season; medals are generally awarded for 1st & 2nd
place in the tournament. Games may also be scheduled against other PONY leagues
in the valley (e.g. Ahwatukee, Scottsdale, Casa Grande, Queen Creek).
Colt Division (ages 15 - 18)
At this age a full major
league size diamond is used. Coaches may protect nine players each and the remainder of the teams are formed via the draft (see Tryouts
& Draft below) with the tryouts on March 28.
Tryouts & Drafts
Beginning at age nine in
the recreational
Mustang, Bronco, Pony & Colt divisions, coaches
are only allowed to protect a limited number of players and then a draft
is used to complete the formation of the teams. Players who are not protected
are invited to attend one or more tryout sessions. During
these sessions players field and hit balls as coaches evaluate them. The
purpose of these sessions is only so that all coaches get an equal chance to
identify and draft players. All registered players are placed on a team; no
players are cut.
Tournament Teams
Each year CYB may elect
to send one or more tournament teams from each of the divisions (except
Shetland) to the PONY Arizona Regional tournaments held each summer. Winners of
these tournaments (except Pinto) advance to the PONY Western Zone tournaments in California, then to the
PONY World Series. All players are invited to try out for these tournament
teams. CYB pays the entrance fee for the tournaments, but other costs
(uniforms, travel, etc.) are paid for by the players or via fundraisers.
